Xiaomi's smartphone sales are going down; Hugo Barra answers

Xiaomi made a perfect entry in many markets in the world after being very successful in its home country, China. It rose up to become a major player in the market. In the beginning, the company was touted as ‘The Apple of China’.

Especially India, Xiaomi’s phones sold like hotcakes through the company’s flash sales . However, with the coming of Lenovo, Motorola, and many others in the same segment as Xiaomi, the company suffered and is kind-of suffering. Not to say that the sales are down heavily.

However, the company’s sales are declining at a fast rate. In first quarter of 2016, the company’s smartphone sales were down by 25 percent compared to last year’s same quarter. Add to that, a 38 percent decline in sales in the second quarter of 2016 compared to the same quarter last year. Also, in the company’s home country, the sales were down by as much as 45 percent.

Xiaomi was earlier the company which could boast awesome, powerful specs on their phones for a very affordable price. Especially in their home country, Xiaomi’s phones sold like crazy because of that particular reason : awesome specs, low price. However, with the coming up of Huawei, Xiaomi has been hit hard. Huawei has seen a huge increase in their smartphone sales.

Huawei is also a chinese company and it will interesting to see how they both will stack up in the future. Earlier, Huawei didn’t sell a lot phones but that’s a different scenario now and with their sales growing, the upcoming years are the one’s we need to look at.

In an interview arranged by reuters, Xiaomi’s Hugo Barra was asked about the declining sales, he said that it doesn’t affect the company as they sell many other products other than smartphones. However, smartphones are the face of the company (at least out of China).
