Disney’s new animated movie “Moana” is doing very well at the box office. The movie picked up $15.7 million just on the first day of the release, also the movie release on the day of Thanksgiving making it a Thanksgiving day top release of the year.
Moana has left other movies in the dust, like the harry potter spin-off “Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them”, the sci-fi movie “The Arrival”. But the point to be noted here is that, these movies were released prior to Moana.
Three years ago, Disney’s “Frozen” was released at the same time of the year and the box office earnings are very close to Moana – $15.2 million. The movie went on to make $93.4 million over the course of five days, Moana is expected to make over $80 million.
The movie “Moana” follows the story of a young girl in the Pacific islands who goes on an journey to save her people. Disney didn’t reveal the budget of the movie, however, most animated movies cost between $150 million to $200 million.
2016 has been a good year for Disney, the company’s “The Jungle Book”, “Zootopia”, and “Finding Dory” have done very well at the box office. The company also has an upcoming movie up its sleeve, a Star Wars spin-off “The Rogue One” which is expected to make more than $130 million on its debut.
